Hi Ronda: Congratulations on your award for this article, which I'm still trying to locate. A question. Do you think that emotional intelligence can be taught? If so, do you think that talking about it is an effective way of teaching it?
Thanks.

Hi, John. The article is available in the ABA Practice Management archives if you are a member. You can also access the article as originally written at http://www.robinrolferesources.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1217&Itemid=104.

Yes, the data shows that emotional intelligence scores go up @ 10-15% after training, which is a much greater increase that you can acheive in IQ testing after training. It is, however, not apparent whether the actual raw emotional intelligence has changed or the strategies employed raise scores Either way the result seems to be increased competence.

Talking about emotional intelligence is a useful tool--awareness always helps. Also checking in with the other person--Did I understand what you meant? Are you angry/pleased/frustrated, etc?-- is a "talking tool" that can be highly useful. Similarly, discussing with an "EI Buddy" their take on a situtation, interaction or person can improve your awareness.

Good luck with your emotional intelligence quest!
